Hemming technology is considered essential in the joining process of interior and exterior parts. On the one hand, the hemmed joint plays an important role in corrosion protection, and on the other, it improves the rigidity of the body components.

What is Hemming?

Generally speaking, hemming is the process of joining two components together by forming a flange. In joining technology, the edge of thin-walled sheet metal is hemmed by 90 degrees to form a hem. Sheets can be joined together in a form-fit by further Hemming, i.e. rebating.

To achieve optimum quality, the hemming process takes place in several stages.

In the past, hemmed joints on car body components were produced exclusively by stationary hemming machines known as "table-top" machines. Shaping tool jaws produce the hem. This is a very reliable but rigid process. An alternative is the use of roller hemming systems. Here, a robot-guided tool is used, which is equipped with a so-called hemming roller. The degrees of freedom provided by the industrial robot make the hemming process very flexible.

Robot-guided hemming heads

With more than 15 years of experience, we are the market leader in the field of robot-guided roller hemming heads. Whether hang-on or add-on parts, our product solutions offer great flexibility and maximum quality in our customers' automated production systems. Some hemming heads even allow efficient hemming with two steps in just one single robot movement.

In counter-roller hemming, one roller performs the forming and the second roller absorbs the resulting force. The counter roller principle results in a closed hemming force curve. An expensive hemming bed is not required as a backing.

Complete hemming systems are always used when special geometries present a particular challenge. In vehicle construction, this is often the case with wheel arches, doors and also, for example, panoramic or sliding roofs.

This is where our manual, pneumatically assisted or fully automated solutions come into play, mastering these tasks with ease. A special feature here is the FFThemtec180°, with which we can even generate a 180° fold.

Accessories and components

FFThemtecroller cleaning enables the automatic cleaning of hemming rollers without interrupting the ongoing automatic process. For the cleaning process, the robot moves with the hemming roller in front of the drive element. There, the hemming roller is moistened with a minimum amount of oil and the adhesive is removed by a scraper.

In addition to this system, FFT is constantly developing further accessories, such as the currentFFThemtecHemQC Force tool for monitoring seam quality and accuracy, in order to continuously improve them.
