The rail industry is facing a period of profound change Challenges

Rising demand for sustainable mobility is putting increasing pressure on manufacturers to expand production capacity whilst ensuring quality, flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Higher production volumes

Global demand for rail vehicles is rising as a result of investment in sustainable mobility. Manufacturers need to expand their production capacity flexibly whilst ensuring efficiency and quality.

Quality requirements

Safety-critical components require the highest standards of manufacturing quality and process stability. Automated systems enable precise and repeatable production throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Skills shortage

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified skilled workers in many areas of manufacturing. Automation helps to alleviate resource shortages and safeguard production processes in the long term.

Cost and time pressures

Rising costs and tight project schedules are increasing competitive pressure on manufacturers. Efficient production processes help to ensure that deadlines are met reliably and that resources are used to their full potential.

a strong partner Expertise and many years of experience

With over 50 years’ experience in industrial automation and numerous railway projects, you can rely on us. FFT is one of the leading engineering and automation partners in industrial plant engineering. Our experience in highly automated manufacturing environments forms the basis for innovative solutions in the railway industry.

Our solution areas

Holistic planning

FFT also develops comprehensive concepts for factory layouts, building management and logistics in order to create efficient and future-proof production environments. The planning process covers all relevant aspects, from factory planning and layout design through to simulations, ergonomic assessments and MTM analyses. The aim is to optimally coordinate production processes and achieve maximum efficiency across all areas.

Particular emphasis is placed on integrating individual systems into overarching overall structures. These include, amongst others, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), logistics systems including fleet management, building management systems, and train control systems. This holistic networking results in intelligent and high-performance production and infrastructure concepts that efficiently interconnect all processes.

FFT's areas of expertise Automation technologies for railway manufacturing

Our solutions combine industrial robotics, intelligent control technology and digital production systems to deliver efficient and future-proof manufacturing in the rail industry.

AI-powered, self-programming robotic systems significantly reduce the effort required for programming and commissioning, thereby enabling more efficient implementation of complex manufacturing processes. Particularly for extensive welding tasks, they open up new possibilities for high-performance and flexible automation – even where traditional manual programming reaches its limits.

High process reliability is ensured through optical position detection and the automatic verification of components, stations and equipment. At the same time, the systems enable rapid adaptation to design changes and new production requirements, for example in cambering or prebending processes.

The integration of Geo and Respot into a single FLEXSTATION enables a particularly efficient welding process. Thanks to the optimised clamping technology, all work steps can be carried out within a single station, eliminating the need for additional transport and handling tasks between multiple stations. This not only reduces the space required in production but also contributes to greater process stability.

The FLEXSTATION can be flexibly used for various applications such as side panels, roofs or underbodies and also offers the advantage of high reusability for future derivatives and vehicle variants. This results in a compact, cost-effective and future-oriented solution for modern production concepts.

Smart logistics enables a significant reduction in internal handling times whilst supporting the integration of automated transport systems into modern manufacturing processes. Conventional conveyor systems such as cranes and trolleys are assessed and adapted for use at new stations.

In addition, innovative solutions such as the heavy-duty AGV FFTigv AGILITY 10t ensure the intelligent networking of individual stations and guarantee a continuous and smooth flow of materials within production. This results in a flexible, efficient and future-oriented logistics solution for modern manufacturing environments.

Our large-scale rotary tables offer bespoke solutions for demanding manufacturing processes. The infrastructure and geometric fixtures are manufactured entirely in-house, guaranteeing the highest quality and maximum flexibility.

Ergonomically designed workstations with position adjustment ensure optimal working conditions and efficient processes. The systems are suitable for both manual spot welding and arc welding and can be equipped with or without a lifting device, depending on requirements. The rotary tables can be manufactured in sizes of up to 3.6 × 20 metres.
