Definition, history & meaning What is white goods
White goods are large household appliances that were traditionally equipped with white enamelled surfaces. These mainly include washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and cookers. White goods are often contrasted with so-called brown goods. While white goods include functional large household appliances, brown goods are classic entertainment and information electronics such as televisions, radios and hi-fi systems. Another category is small electrical appliances (e.g. hoovers, coffee machines or toasters), which are also not categorised as white goods.
The term "white goods" goes back to the early household appliances of the 20th century, which were mostly painted or enamelled. Even though modern appliances are now often offered in stainless steel, black or other colours, the term has remained the industry standard .
White goods play a central role in modern everyday life. It makes housework easier, provides convenience and makes a decisive contribution to quality of life. Energy efficiency and sustainability are also playing an increasingly important role in the development of new appliances. Manufacturers are increasingly focussing on low electricity and water consumption, a long service life and the possibility of recycling materials.
With increasing digitalisation, many white goods appliances are now smart appliances. These can be operated by app or voice control and are often integrated into a networked smart home system.
