Our vision A closed-loop process in the battery cycle

We are working and conducting research into a fully closed-loop battery cycle in which raw materials are efficiently recovered and reused. Using state-of-the-art recycling processes, valuable raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt are recovered from end-of-life batteries and used in the manufacture of new batteries. This conserves resources, reduces waste and lays the foundations for a sustainable and future-proof battery industry.

FFT develops cell-forming equipment Cell production

One major reference project is the Fraunhofer Institute’s PreFab pilot plant in Münster. Across a research area of 3,000 m², pioneering production processes are being tested there – an important milestone for batteries ‘Made in Germany’ and the establishment of competitive battery production in Europe.

Our production lines enable the efficient and precise manufacture of modern battery systems. From module production to pack assembly, we offer flexible manufacturing solutions that ensure the highest quality standards, automation and scalability.

Manufacture of the control system Battery management

The battery control unit is manufactured on a highly automated production line. All process steps – from assembly and software programming through to the final quality check – are efficiently linked together.

    • Relays, electrical components, heat sink, cable harnesses, housing and cover
  • Technologies
    • Hot caulking, application of thermal paste (dispensing), screw fastening, cleaning with ionised compressed air
    • Camera inspection and battery testing (EoL)
  • Component feeding
    • Screw separation using bin picking, component feeding via AGVs, automated material flow
  • Software flashing and end-of-line (EoL) testing
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD protection) and cleanroom environment

As e-mobility has become an integral part of the automotive industry, FFT has developed expertise in BOL, in-line and EOL battery testing, and offers a wide range of test procedures, including low-voltage and high-voltage tests, communication tests, insulation resistance, dielectric strength and safety tests.

Efficient, cost-effective, circular-economy-oriented dismantling and processing EKODA Research Project

As part of the EKODA project, FFT is working on the automated connection and electrical condition assessment of high-voltage traction batteries at the end of their life. The project demonstrates how end-effectors can be used on battery modules and packs as a key technology for automation and the circular economy in the automotive sector.
