FFTmetrology Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) Special feature of the leak detection pig
HOW THE LEAK DETECTION PIG WORKS
The universal leak detection pig detects creeping leaks at an early stage and determines their exact position in oil pipelines. Oil pipelines are usually laid underground, and the amount of oil escaping from creeping leaks is often so small that conventional leak detection methods fail. This type of leak poses a significant problem as it can remain undetected for years.
The FFTmetrology Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) provides a solution to this problem. This inspection system uses an integrated hydrophone to record and analyse the ultrasonic signals generated by slow leaks in the frequency range from 20 to 40 kHz. The leak position is determined using three odometer wheels, which enable precise length measurement within the pipeline. In this way, even the smallest leaks can be reliably detected and located.
BACKGROUND TO THE REGULATION BY TÜV SÜD
Four times a year, TÜV Süd conducts a thorough inspection of the pipelines, known as the DD test (differential pressure test). During this test, the pressure in the pipeline is gradually increased to the maximum while certain section valves are closed. This allows the individual sections of the pipeline to be checked for possible pressure losses. This test ensures that leaks are detected, documented and repaired at an early stage. This prevents oil from escaping from the pipeline into the environment, for example. The DD test takes about a week and requires the pipeline to be temporarily shut down, during which time no oil is transported.
ADVANTAGE OF A LEAK DETECTION PIG
However, if the pipeline operator successfully carries out a pig run every month and can thus provide TÜV Süd with proof of the pipeline's tightness, the number of DD tests to be carried out is reduced from four times to once a year. This avoids the need to shut down the pipeline.
